The power of Joe Intili's "Beetle" carving cannot be adequately captured in a single photograph. The stone must be held in sunlight and turned in every direction. Only then can one fully appreciate its depth and iridescence. Both the colors and the carving - which includes a mouth on the underside and tiny mandibles on top - are extremely realistic. Acquired from the estate
collection of Bruce Aslop, known to many as the "Grandfather of Fire Agate", the
original stone was oddly shaped but brilliant in color. Using the stone's natural curves
and contour Joe Intili worked the fire, cleaning by hand the brown matrix valleys
surrounding each bubble of color to create a richly textured full fire carving. This
exceptional example of Arizona fire agate features the signature and style of a Joe Intili
masterpiece. |
